Mowaan
Preserving century-old herbal remedies while transforming a great-grandfather’s clinic into a living museum.
Nestled in a quaint alley near Sao Chingcha, the striking Sino-Portuguese-style building of Bamrungchat Satsana Yathai Pharmacy is a historical landmark. Founded by Mowaan or Dr. Waan Rodmuang, a progressive Thai traditional medicine practitioner during the reign of King Rama V, this establishment served as a prominent clinic for its era.
Mowaan’s innovative spirit lay in merging Thai and Western medical traditions. While most herbalists of the time offered raw herbs, he pioneered pre-formulated Thai herbal pills, packaged in imported Western-style bottles, making them accessible and modern. This legacy is carried forward by the fourth generation, Pasinee Yanothai, who continues to preserve traditional recipes while modernizing products to suit contemporary lifestyles. Alongside this, the pharmacy has been transformed into a heritage museum, showcasing its rich history and cultural significance. A notable feature is the custom-designed typeface inspired by the handwritten labels on the original bottles, a nod to the timeless elegance of Moaan’s brand.
Bringing a century-old family herbal formula into a user-friendly form, this remedy aids digestion, motion sickness, and cough relief.
An interesting tip: taking one lozenge before a massage can make you feel notably more relaxed!
