OWN THE STORY

Moh Mee

A century-old traditional medicine formula, the origin of Sam Yaek Moh Mee intersection, and a canal once filled with the fragrant aroma of herbal remedies.

Mr. Mee Kasemsuwan served in the royal court during the reign of King Rama V, holding a position at the Osot Sala, a designated apothecary. Though he was not a practicing physician, Thais commonly addressed him as "Moh" (Doctor) out of habit. In 1898 (BE 2441), he founded Boonmee Dispensary at Sam Yaek Rong Nang Singapore (the Singapore Cinema Intersection), producing and selling remedies such as nasal snuff, Triniseng pills, Uthai medicine, and Patthawi balm. Over time, the intersection itself became widely known as Sam Yaek Moh Mee, a name that remains on official signage today. Though Moh Mee Co., Ltd. has since relocated to Rama I Road, the former Moh Mee family residence, once home to their herbal medicine production, stood along Khlong Saen Saeb in Kasemsan 3 Alley. In the past, passersby would recognize the area by the rich herbal aroma that filled the air. Today, this historic location has been transformed into a hidden bar, where the fourth-generation descendants have creatively reinterpreted Moh Mee’s medicinal legacy into innovative cocktail recipes.

While traditional Thai medicine may seem unfamiliar to younger generations—whether it’s nasal snuff that requires a sharp inhalation, potent-smelling herbal tonics for blood circulation, or Uthai essence that has faded from daily use—Moh Mee continues to adapt its heritage to meet the needs of modern consumers, all while preserving its century-old formulas.

The creator of numerous renowned medicinal formulas, whose pharmacy became so well-known that the intersection where it stood was named “Mo Mi Intersection.”
